Immigration Team Spring Seminar


Garden Court North Chambers’ Immigration Team, recognised as one of the leading sets in the country for its provision of specialist advice on all aspects of asylum, immigration and nationality law, invites you to the 2017 Spring Seminar on Wednesday April 5th 2017 between 9.30am and 5pm (followed by a drinks reception), with Guest Speaker Professor Yaron Matras (Professor of Linguistics at the University of Manchester).

9.30am Registration and refreshments

10-11.30am ‘The future of family and private life’

This session will cover the latest case law developments in issues related to Article 8 ECHR, including the recent Supreme Court cases on Appendix FM and deportation. We will also take stock of the case law that has built up around Part 5A of the NIAA 2002 and children’s best interests.

11.30-11.45am Refreshments

11.45am-12.15pm ‘Procedure Update’

This session will look at some of the major current issues in tribunal and Home Office procedure, including withdrawal, costs, litigation capacity and notices of removal.

12.15-12.45pm ‘Making the most of visits’

This session will look at making the most of the changes to Immigration Rules about visits after categories have been streamlined and options within categories expanded.

12.45-1.45pm Buffet Lunch

1.45-2.45pm ‘Article 3 ECHR: changing approaches’

This session will discuss the potentially very significant impact of the ECtHR judgement in Paposhvili v Belgium and how to approach multi-issue Article 3 ECHR cases.

2.45-3pm Refreshments

3-5pm ‘Refugees in Europe’

This session will welcome our guest speaker, Professor Yaron Matras, Professor of Linguistics at the University of Manchester, who will examine the Home Office’s use of ‘language analysis’ to determine the origin of asylum applicants. In addition there will be reports from the ground on the conditions for refugees in Greece and the flows of migrants in Europe as well as an update on Dublin III issues and unaccompanied asylum seeking children in Europe/ the Dubs amendment.

Places are priced at £75.00 + VAT (£90.00 inc VAT) per delegate which includes refreshments, a buffet lunch and delegate materials.

A reduced rate of £37.50 + VAT (£45.00 inc VAT) is available per delegate for Not for Profit/ voluntary organisations.
