Public law

‘Garden Court North Chambers maintains its reputation as the pre-eminent set in the North for public law. Barristers from the set are sought after for their extensive expertise in a wide range of issues.’

– Chambers and Partners, 2023.

Since Garden Court North Chambers was established we have striven to be a leader in the field of public law. Chambers has long recognised that public law challenges are a key method of upholding and furthering the rights of the citizen against the State.

Ranked as a Tier 1 set by The Legal 500, 2022, the team has particular expertise in public law matters involving human rights, immigration, housing and homelessness, community care, mental health, prison law, Court of Protection, Inquests and Public Inquiries, criminal law and welfare rights. Additional notable strengths include inquests and public inquiries. Recently, the set was involved in the judicial review G and H v Upper Tribunal and the Secretary of State for the Home Department, a notable challenge against the Upper Tribunal’s decision to refuse permission for an appeal from the First-tier Tribunal.”

Administrative law remedies inform all areas of Chambers’ practice and we are alive to the possibilities for challenge to administrative decision-making, particularly in light of the Human Rights Act 1998. Our involvement in these areas has been assisted by and has assisted the development of the Administrative Court in Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds.

Members of Chambers regularly provide training to other legal professionals in judicial review practice and procedure (including regular updates) and all areas engaging the exercise of public law functions.

Chambers has a commitment to legally aided work and therefore places emphasis on providing representation to individuals and community groups who may be affected adversely by poor quality administrative decision-making.

We have been annual sponsors of the Public Law Project “JR North” conference in Manchester since 2007.

Although Chambers is in Manchester, our members frequently travel to courts across England and Wales. If you would like to know more about our public law work please contact the Practice Management Team on 0161 817 6377 or at gcn@gcnchambers.co.uk.
