Garden Court North Chambers are pleased to announce an immigration law seminar to take place in Manchester. Aimed at immigration practitioners at all levels of experience, this seminar will update delegates on the latest developments in immigration and asylum law including developments in legislation and policy, an overview of the new points based system, challenging immigration detention, removal and deportation, and a focus on unaccompanied asylum seeking children.

1. Developments in legislation and policy – Rory O'Ryan (i) The UK Borders Act 2007: including automatic deportation of ‘foreign criminals’, (ii) Update on Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill, and (iii) Deportation by the back door: Immigration Rules requiring mandatory periods of exclusion for overstayers etc; potential challenges
2. Challenging immigration detention / removal – Melanie Plimmer An overview of recent challenges to immigration detention and removal including practical guidelines on seeking relief including interim relief, urgent relief, release and damages.
3. Caselaw update on immigration law - speaker tbc
4. Points Based System – Kerry Smith An overview of the Points Based System with a focus on Tier 1 (General) Migrants
5. Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children (UASC) – Alex Durance Age disputes, challenging social services assessments, AIT procedure and the after care duties of Local Authorities under the Children Act 1989.
6. More on Article 8 – Paul Draycott New caselaw, suicide risk (Article 3) and deportation.
The seminar is charged at £50+ VAT (£58.75 inc VAT) per person and £35 + VAT (£41.13 inc VAT) per person for voluntary organisations.
