Melanie Plimmer will be one of the keynote speakers at the WASP (Women Asylum Seekers from Pakistan) Project National Conference to take place in Manchester next month.
The WASP project is a groundbreaking study conducted by South Manchester Law Centre and Manchester Metropolitan University focusing on the experience of Women Asylum Seekers from Pakistan who seek refugee protection in the UK as a result of fleeing domestic violence in Pakistan.
Keynote speakers include:
- Hina Jilani (Human Rights Lawyer based in Pakistan and UN Rapporteur) - Protection versus Freedom: domestic violence and the case of women in Pakistan.
- Pragna Patel (Chair of Southall Black Sisters) - Out of the frying pan into the fire? Women, Violence and immigration control.
- Melanie Plimmer (Garden Court North) - The background to and legal developments in the definition of ‘Membership of a Particular Social Group’ in domestic violence cases
- Alison Stanley (Head of Immigration at Bindman and Partners) - Gathering evidence of domestic violence in asylum cases: the impact of the New Asylum Model and changes to legal aid.
