Mark George on Criminal Appeals process

16/11/2007

Garden Court North Chambers barrister Mark George was interviewed on BBC Radio Manchester this morning about the Criminal Appeals process.

Mark George was invited onto the show to explain to listeners about the criminal appeals process (following the recent decision in the Barry George appeal) http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7095885.stm .

Mark explained areas including the step-by-step process followed when appealing a criminal conviction, considerations such as jury selection in such high profile cases and also contrasted the British Appeal system with that available in American States where the death penalty is still in force. He hilighted the fact that the absence of a system of Legal Aid even in capital cases has led to many people facing capital charges getting very poor standards of legal representation leading in many cases to a miscarriage of justice.
