Mark George lecture on Death Penalty law for Amicus  

Amicus, the charity which provides training to lawyers planning to undertake internships in the US is running a half day introductory course on US death penalty law and practice in Manchester. Mark George , barrister from Garden Court North Chambers will speak on aspects of trial procedure, jury selection, mitigation and sentencing and Dave Keefe, former Chicago based trial lawyer and lecturer at UCE in Birmingham will speak on the appeals process and research methods.

Timetable:

1pmWelcome and Introduction

1.05 – 3.10 pm Mark George – Trial Procedure, Jury Selection, Mitigation and Punishment Phase

3.10 – 3.20 pm Coffee Break

3.20 – 4.20 pm Dave Keefe – Appeal procedure

4.20 – 5.00 pm Dave Keefe – Researching US Law

5.00 – 5.05 pm Key Issues surrounding the Death Penalty

5.15 – 6.45 pm Showing of the film “Deadline” (about the extraordinary exoneration of over 120 inmates of death row in Illinois by Governor George Ryan.)

This course is intended to be short introduction to the law and practice involved in death penalty litigation. The course is designed to be of interest to anyone who wants to find out more about the death penalty in the US, the work that Amicus does and how you can get involved. The course will be of interest to qualified lawyers and students alike.
