Amicus is a charity that assists those representing impoverished people facing execution in the United States. They offer legal and humanitarian assistance by placing individuals in capital defence offices throughout the United States. Volunteers who are unable to undertake internships in the US can assist with the work in the UK.

Amicus presents an introductory programme to provide a basic understanding of the American legal process and the issues involved in capital defense work. The course provides an insight into Amicus’ extensive two-weekend course held in London every Spring and Autumn. Training is run with leading practitioners and academics. It provides practical as well as theoretical skills to assist defense counsel with the representation of those facing execution. It helps individuals develop the specific skills required for this kind of work, as well as orienting them to the various issues they will be confronting.

This introductory programme gives those interested in human rights/death penalty work an opportunity to:

  • Learn more about US death penalty law & Capital Trial Procedure
  • Hear from those who have worked in this field (both from the UK and US)
  • Learn more about Amicus and its work
