Bury Council women workers' equal pay claim upheld

Bury Metropolitan Borough Council had appealed against a tribunal ruling that women were entitled to the same bonuses as men in similar low-paid jobs.

The Employment Appeal Tribunal's decision confirms that over 900 mainly low paid women, such as carers, catering assistants, cooks, cleaners, domestic assistants, school crossing patrol attendants, home carers, are entitled to compensation for the years they were paid less than male council workers doing comparable jobs.
The claimants Hamilton and others were represented by Kate Stone of GCN and leading counsel Brian Napier QC of Cloisters.
