WASP Conference 7th December 2007  

The WASP project is a groundbreaking study conducted by South Manchester Law Centre and Manchester Metropolitan University focusing on the experience of Women Asylum Seekers from Pakistan who seek refugee protection in the UK as a result of fleeing domestic violence in Pakistan.

Keynote speakers include:

• Hina Jilani (Human Rights Lawyer based in Pakistan and UN Rapporteur) - Protection versus Freedom: domestic violence and the case of women in Pakistan.
• Pragna Patel (Chair of Southall Black Sisters) - Out of the frying pan into the fire? Women, Violence and immigration control.
• Melanie Plimmer (Garden Court North) - The background to and legal developments in the definition of ‘Membership of a Particular Social Group’ in domestic violence cases
• Alison Stanley (Head of Immigration at Bindman and Partners) - Gathering evidence of domestic violence in asylum cases: the impact of the New Asylum Model and changes to legal aid.
