Nina Grahame joins chambers

07/04/2008

Garden Court North Chambers are pleased to welcome Nina Grahame with effect from 7th April 2008.

Nina, a specialist in criminal law, has joined Garden Court North from 2 Hare Court.

"Nina was called to the bar in 1993, and has appeared as leading junior in manslaughter, drugs and fraud cases as well as cases involving serious violence and sexual impropriety." (The Times Online 22.4.08)

She joins Garden Court North at a time when this civil liberties set is actively expanding in size in crime, prison law and civil. Based in Chambers in Manchester, Nina will however continue to practice both in the South and in the North. Senior clerk Sarah Wright adds “Nina brings further depth to our crime team of 15 practitioners. She has defended in numerous cases involving children as alleged victims and/or witnesses, and has extensive experience in the complex issues relating to concurrent High Court family proceedings, including Hague Convention proceedings (abduction).”

In 2008 Nina represented the defendant convicted of manslaughter after trial for the murder of a teenager. This case led directly to the issue of knife detectors to every school in Southampton, the first UK city to adopt such a practice [see BBC news item ]. She also represented defendants in 2 separate murder trials relating to the killing of their wives (one of which also attracted media attention at the time when a juror listened to her ipod under her hijab [see Times article ]).
