Practice

Public law

Practices in public law, particularly arising from his immigration and prison law practices and has a keen interest in cases with civil liberties implications.

Immigration and Asylum

Has worked in immigration and asylum since 2004 in both the voluntary sector and private practice before being called to the Bar. Undertakes the full range of immigration hearings at all levels of the tribunal including entry clearance, PBS (Points Based System), asylum, deportation appeals, bail hearings and cases involving human rights arguments. Also advises on grounds for judicial review.

Crime

Regularly undertakes Youth Court and Magistrates Court trials throughout the region and also appears in the Crown Court. Experience includes assault, drugs charges (including Class A), theft, criminal damage, immigration / passport and identity card offences, protest cases and breaches of orders. Has a special interest in police powers and criminal charges arising out of demonstrations. Also undertakes appeals by way of Case Stated from the Magistrates Court.

Prison law

Instructed in all forms of prison law including representation at adjudication, parole board and lifer panel hearings. During pupillage undertook work in areas including sentence calculation, false imprisonment and recategorisation.

Housing law

Undertakes the full range of housing law including defending possession claims, public law defences in possession claims, defending injunction proceedings and committal for breach of injunctions.

Background

Completed pupillage with Garden Court North Chambers under the supervision of Pete Weatherby and became a tenant in January 2011. Previously worked as an immigration caseworker at Robert Lizar Solicitors, Latitude Law and Greater Manchester Immigration Aid Unit. Writes book reviews for Oxford Transitional Justice Research Centre, a group that researches states recovering from conflict. As part of this group he contributed to research on the work of the International Criminal Court in Uganda. > more
